Locked-down but Not Given Up

2020 and the entry into 2021 has been challenging due to the Covid-19 restrictions. I personally found the last lockdown post Christmas the most difficult compared with previous lockdown.

The most significant impact was the limited chances to see family and eventually the feeling of isolation however, there has been some positives born out of lockdown. Those positives surrounding growing interests mainly a resurgence in cycling, re-introduction to vinyl and although I have been learning the violin over the past 12 months, I’ve had more time to dedicate to practicing.

Resurgence of Cycling

Like many of us, I have had many different bikes as a child but as I grew older my interest waned. I have always been involved in sport but patella displacements (kneecap dislocations) have impaired my performance.

I have often thought about cycling but since those problems it has had a psychological impact when thinking about riding. Yet, during an activity week I delivered to young people through my work included bike rides. Those bike rides reminded me how fun it is to cycle and demonstrated how much I missed this experience. I therefore bought a cheep bike to get started and this was the starting of a rekindled passion. Through lockdown, I focused on cycling around my local area and was gripped with the sense of freedom that cycling caters for.

My growing interest resulted in ordering a road bike during the summer of 2020 for delivery in May 2021. Since then, I have received my new road bike and thoroughly enjoy experience riding and exploring the local area.

Vinyl

it’s been a long time since I listened to records. I received a turntable as a Christmas present in 2020 and since then I have amassed over 50 records, to say that I’m addicted is an understatement. I don’t whether it is just me, I have found that it is far easier to discover new music through collecting vinyl than through other means. I already had an eclectic taste but this has also expanded. My passion has also moved beyond record collecting and found myself buying new speakers, Bowers and Wilkins and also a new integrated Amp, Rotel A11. I’m further planning on buying a new CD player and DAC. In and amongst this upgrade I’m also considering new speaker and interconnect wires.

Dabbling with audio equipment and collecting records has also cope navigating lockdown and as you’ll probably know, waiting for orders to arrive is exciting – I’ve never done so much online shopping.

Violin

I began learning the violin prior to being made aware of Covid-19, I am still a novice but enjoy the journey of learning an instrument. Being in lockdown and even though I am continued working, the time I have got back from commuting has translated in practicing the violin.

Overall

Even though I have worked throughout lockdown I have mentioned that the time commuting and having to get up early has translated in investing this time into my activities that enjoy. This blog will take you through my journey as I continue to gain new experiences.

Hope you have enjoyed reading this and leave a comment about what activities you have either taken up during lockdown or the increased time you have been able to invest in your passions.
